CAMPAIGN ISSUES

Police Numbers

Labour has wholly failed to tackle law and order and has cut police numbers. Despite having the highest crime rate Humberside has faced the biggest police cuts - some 150 officers down since 1997.

The Conservatives have pledged to reverse Labour's police cuts. "Since Humberside has had the biggest police cuts under Labour, it will gain the most from the return of a Conservative Government", says Stephen Howd.

Improving Public Services

Labour has failed to deliver on Health and Education but still promises "jam tomorrow". The Conservatives would match Labour's spending plans but would spend the money better. We would ensure that the NHS treats first the patients most in need and would introduce guaranteed maximum waiting times. We would set schools free and would cut down on unnecessary form filling so that teachers can get on with teaching.

Keep the £ and preserve Britain's independence

"This election could well decide whether Britain remains an independent country", says Stephen Howd. "Labour is determined to scrap the Pound which would lead to us losing control of our taxes, our public spending, and our interest rates. Meanwhile Labour has signed up to the crazy idea of a European Army. We can't go on like this. The British people want to be in Europe but we do not want to be run by Europe."

A fair deal for pensioners

Pensioners will be better off under the Conservatives. Every pensioner will receive an above-inflation increase in the basic state pension. We will abolish tax on savings for basic rate taxpayers and increase allowances so that one million more pensioners will pay no tax at all.

Restore national control of our fishing waters

The European Common Fisheries Policy has been a disaster for Britain's fishermen and has led to the decimation of our fish stocks. As part of the Conservative vision of "In Europe, not run by Europe" a Conservative Government would negotiate for the restoration of national control over Britain's fishing waters.

Stallingborough Incinerator

Stephen Howd had pledged his support for the campaign against the proposed Incinerator at Stallingborough. He says "People are understandably concerned about the effect it might have on their health and it could cost jobs in the food industry. We should be moving towards more recycling of waste rather than incineration."

Proper controls on asylum seekers

Under Labour Britain has become a soft touch for bogus asylum seekers rather than a safe haven for those genuinely in fear of persecution. Conservatives would house asylum seekers in secure reception centres and would scrap Labour's policy of dispersing asylum seekers to communities such as Cleethorpes.
