Gordon Smith the Liberal Democrat candidate for the Cleethorpes County constituency said today that he was proud to be the representative of a Party that cared so passionately about the elderly. There is more to caring about senior citizens than simply offering to increase pensions, we would establish an independent Pensions Authority. To guarantee that pensions do not fall behind the rest of the population, the Authority will report annually to the Government on an appropriate up-rating for the state pension. It will take into account levels of pensioner poverty, the growth in earnings and national income and affordability. We will also establish a more stable environment for pension planning by seeking to secure all-party consensus before making future pension reforms. We would extend the entitlement to the basic state pension to all citizens. People would no longer have to show a history of contributions in order to claim their basic pension.

RECYCLING THE KEY

“I have found that an issue on everybody’s lips is that of waste disposal and more importantly the proposed incinerator to be built at Stallingborough.”
“I am constantly asked where the Liberal Democrats stand on this issue."
"Waste disposal is something that requires a co-ordinated programme that embraces the nation, not local authorities working as individual units."
"Our National Recycling programme will provide a doorstep recycling collection for every household by the end of the next parliament."
"We will seek to recycle 60% of household waste within 10 years. We will also gradually increase the infill tax to encourage alternative methods of disposal, backed up by an eventual ban on all but certain types of waste.
We will not build waste incinerators".
"The Liberal Democrats are the only party that have consistently voted against the Stallingborough being built."

Gordon Smith Adopted 19th May

The North East Lincolnshire Liberal Democrats held their Adoption Meeting for Gordon Smith - Parliamentary Candidate for the Cleethorpes Constituency at Matthew Humberston School on Saturday 19th May 2001. The Guest speaker was Diana Wallis Euro MP.
In his address to the meeting Gordon Smith said that he would be fighting the seat on 3 main issues, Welfare Rights and the Elderly, Law and Order and Education. He said the elderly should have Security, Dignity and Choice.
Security means a decent pension to live on without means testing.
Dignity is not having to sell everything to pay for the care you need in old age and Choice means you can stop working when you want to, or you can continue if you wish, age should not matter.
The Liberal Democrats would make the money available to recruit more police but these would be supplemented by part time community officers. "I am a member of a party that will not only reduce class sizes by recruiting more teachers, but we retain them and more importantly value them."
The candidate ended his address by saying he had now finished work in order to fight the election and a campaign plan had been drawn up. It was time for a change in North East Lincolnshire and the Liberal Democrats are ready and able to bring it about.
